Europa Hotel

Europa Hotel

Belfast

The worlds most bombed hotel.

The Europa is a city centre Hotel in the heart of Belfast. Although it has only been open for forty years, it has played a massive role in the life of the city and also in the lives of many who worked in Northern Ireland during the troubles.

At the height of the tensions, journalists from all around the world would stay at the Europa which made it (and the surrounding streets) prime target for bomb threats both hoax and actual. In some cases, the world's media didn't even have to leave their hotel rooms to find their reports for the day.

In total, there have been 28 separate explosions in and around the Europa with hundreds more bomb hoaxes. The Europa is certainly the most bombed hotel in Europe (with some hotels In Kosovo coming a close second), if not the world.

As the troubles in Northern Ireland began to subside, the hotel saw a new growth in tourism and business and has continued to play an important role in the life of Belfast. During the public referendum on the vote for peace, a massive banner was suspended from the hotel which simply read 'YES' and in 1995, US President Bill Clinton overnighted at the hotel which then effectively became the Whitehouse during the visit with some of the Communications, Nuclear Strategy and Security moving to the premises for the evening.

More recently, pop-stars from around the world stopped in the hotel during November 2011 when the Odyssey Arena hosted the MTV:EMA Music Awards.

The Hotel is currently owned and operated by the Hastings Hotel group who also own other prestige hotels around Northern Ireland.

View from the Days Hotel, Belfast, United Kingdom
The view here certainly was not as pleasant as from some of the other hotels I stayed at. The view on the other side was of a mural depicting a man in a balaclava with an automatic weapon, proclaiming that I was now entering Loyalist Sandy Row. It was a little disconcerting, but all in all this place turned out to be quite pleasant.
